What's new on this site?

2003 March 13 Thursday. Added The Ghosting of Heineman Jubiladilia&, a fantasy story set in Chalakanesia.

2003 March 13 Thursday. Added a short story called An Alien in Japan. This science fiction story, an SF story about aliens a piece of fiction set in Japan.

2003 March 12 Wednesday. Added a fantasy story, The Warden of Jestabel Zee.

2003 March 11 Tuesday. Added a horror - fantasy story about recovered memory, Gap Music.

2003 March 02 Sunday. The bad news is that war is coming. The good news is that I have CNN. With this in mind, I wrote a new poem, Sex Metal - Sex metal zex metal zow metal zap metal - / Look, George, look!

2003 February 27 Thursday. Added a horror story, Live on Channel 10.

2003 February 23 Sunday. Posted a short story called The Transfer of Patient Twenty-Seven - a mainstream story written a while back, and so containing nothing even remotely connected to the present crisis.

2003 February 22 Saturday. Had the SiteLevel spiders come and re-crawl this site to update the "Search" function ... as of 2154 today, the site contained 249 documents and a total of 516,181 words, all of which should now be searchable.

2003 February 19 Wednesday. Added a poem, Dreamscape With Giraffes.

2003 February 19 Wednesday. The war links page has been redesigned recently to make it a more efficient instrument for clicking through to news, postings and opinion. I've started using it myself on a regular basis (I figure the best way to improve your website is to use it.)

2003 February 16 Sunday. Added a poem, Grafton in Spring.

2003 February 16 Sunday. Added the text of Acorns - a mainstream story set in the U.S.A. Partly about acorns, but mostly not. This story was written before George Bush somehow transmogrified himself into Darth Vadar, and consequently it makes absolutely no reference whatsoever to ... well, you don't really need the list, do you?

2003 February 13 Thursday. Nuclear war in Iraq: a man from the CIA shares his fears.

2003 February 12 - added a page about depleted uranium which has some introductory facts and a selection of links. Depleted uranium is a radioactive metal used in modern ammunition. The use of this weapon leaves the landscape contaminated by a substance which is, at one and the same time, both a chemical poison and a radiation hazard. Depleted uranium is the weapon of choice of the British and American armed forces, and will undoubtedly be used, and used on a large scale, when George Bush goes to war with Iraq, as he very shortly will.

2003 February 11 - I've updated my list of links to blogs to include a blog in Israel and a blog in Iraq, both naturally strongly focused on the upcoming war. Ironically, each of these blogs has a link to the other.

2003 February 11 - UFO Invasion - the Truth about Alien Abductions!!  Each year, millions of Americans are abducted by aliens. But why? This lightly fictionalized account of a TRUE STORY supplies the answer.

2003 January 31 - updated war links ... have been nosing around the Internet and found some stuff about depleted uranium, which may be the cause (or one of the causes) of the disabling illnesses so many American serivcemen have suffered since serving in the Persian Gulf War. The staggering fact appears to be that, out of every four American soliders who went to the Persian Gulf, one is now getting some kind of service-related disability pay. (Apart from depleted uranium, another possible culprit appears to be, possibly, exposure to low levels of sarin.)

2003 January 31 - added the poem Waterfall and the poem Still Life.

2003 January 29 - posted complete text of the science fiction novel The Worshippers and the Way and also the complete text of the fantasy novel The Witchlord and the Weaponmaster, both accessible through the novels page. Both novels are aimed at an adult audience and The Witchlord and the Weaponmaster contains some fairly graphic scenes of battle injuries and torture.

2003 January 17 - posted new science fiction story A Pilgrimage to Plaka Kalada. Also added a description of the contents of the newsletter.

2003 January 12 - posted new fantasy story The Secret History of Lord Dreldragon.

2003 January 11 - Revised prediction: a thirty percent chance of war on the Korean peninsular in 2003.

2003 January 10 - posted radically revised and expanded fantasy story Life and Death in Oolong Morblock (an early version of which was published in 2000 as Life and Death in Oolong Jalabar. Elements include life, death, life after death, ghosts, self-delusion, murder.

2003 January 10 - posted new science fiction story Quilting. Elements include terrorism, experiences causative of terrorism and a terrorist attack on the United States.

2003 January 10 - posted new science fiction story The Suicide Bomber. Elements include terrorism, suicide bombers, alien invasion.

2003 January 10 - posted new science fiction story Patriots. Elements include terrorism, American response to terrorism, SUVs and the ongoing war for oil, government surveillance, AI theory, modeling of human activity with computers, computer modeling as an aid to threat detection.

2003 January 09 - posted new science fiction story Bad Sex. Elements include media feeding frenzy, clones, cloning, John Milton, Paradise Lost, attitudes toward sex.

2003 January 08 - since the digital camera arrived at Christmas, I've been shooting snapshots, and have been incorporating bits and pieces of these in the site. Today I added a search box provided by an outfit called whatUseek, which you can find on the web by searching for "siteLevel". One of their software robots went spidering through the site to index it (very quickly, I might add - I was impressed) and reported that at this stage there are 176 documents and 97,292 words on the site. This service is advertising-supported, and this outfit (whatUseek) will index up to 1,000 pages for free.

2003 January 07 - added a link leading to the full text of my science fiction story Lost in the Moid which is on the Challenging Destiny site.

2003 January 03 - added a temporary five-page photo collection showing ten images of Japan at New Year 2003.

2003 January 01 - added a photo of the ritual mochi snowman which shows up in Japanese homes at this time of year.

2002 December 30 - updated the diary including my predictions for 2003.

2002 December 26 - got a letter from John Berbrich of Barbaric Yawp accepting my story Views of Texas. This reminded me of the first piece of mine that appeared in Barbaric Yawp, a vignette entitled Mountaineering Complex, which I went and placed on the website.

2002 December 25 - started writing in my diary about the political response to Aids / HIV and by the time I was done I had an essay-length piece of work.

2002 December 21 - added page of links to sites about war, nuclear war, the possibility of nuclear weapons being used in Iraq, and the morality of killing civilians in time of war. Some of these links are to contemporary news sources. I have added a date saying when each page was active - my untested assumption is that most links to newspapers and so forth will fail after a few days.

2002 December 20 - moved my how to write fiction project onto this site.

2002 December 17 - finally bestirred myself and added the text of the story Remembering Nagasaki to the website after meditating about my slothful conscience in my diary ... after all, if I've got time to mess around adding links to blog webrings and so forth, then I've got time to do this ....

2002 December 17 - added the text of the story Diving on the Wreck. This story is set in Chalakanesia. (Parenthetically, my plans for 2003 include rewriting an unpublished Chalakanesian novel called West of Heaven).

2002 December 17 - began the process of adding links to blogs and webrings. (A year ago I would not have known the meaning of either "blog" or "webring". A "blog", also known as a "weblog", is a diary on the Internet. A "webring" is a bunch of sites which are linked together in a ring, so you can click from site to site, maybe with the option of choosing a random site in the ring.)

2002 December 10 - updated the list of short story credits. The diary has also been updated on an irregular basis, most recently yesterday (the provocation being that it snowed). By now I have begun building two more websites, and the links to these have been added. They are hughcook.tripod.com (a site still very much under construction at this writing) and a how-to-write site hughcook.bravepages.com.

2002 November 01 - removed all the "internet diary" stuff from the website (a diary about my struggles to do Internet-related computer tasks, such as make my own favicon). On reflection, this stuff is not likely to interest anyone - it doesn't really interest me. Fumbling around trying to do basic stuff with computers is like learning to tie your shoelaces. It's necessary, and it's absorbing while you're doing it, but once you know then so what?

2002 November 01 - added the time travel story Basque and the "Switzerland conquers the world" story Swiss Toys

2002 October 30 - uploaded revised version with slightly tweaked interface and fresh diary entries.

2002 October 26 - added the poem Cicada Sun, which was written in 1973 and was first published in 1976. Also added the stories Consenting Adults, Golf Course, Consequences, Wet Leaves on the Track and Gally Smith and the Massacre of the Orcs. Also added a link to the www.hyperdictionary.com page on my research links page - there is a direct link to the www.hyperdictionary.com page and also a search box which allows the www.hyperdictionary.com database to be searched from this site.

Old entry reads "2002 October 23 - added a favicon icon update to my Internet diary. Warning: this is computer nerd stuff." Later, 2002 November 01, took out this nerd stuff (too pointless and disorganized. Not good nerd stuff). Entry for 2002 October 23 continues, "Also added a research links page where I have a couple of links for doing basic dictionary / encyclopaedia / gazetteer research on the Internet."

2002 October 22 - added some Japanese-language links (e.g. to weather). Added a poetry bibliography.

Old entry says: "2002 October 20 - having made my own logo, a black capital H followed by a small c, the hollow of the c filled with red and the rest of the background yellow, I added this to a couple of pages of the website. Although I still don't pretend to understand what I am doing, I seem to have achieved at least partial success with favicons (the little icons designed to show in the address bar of at least some browsers), and the account of my decidedly undignified blundering is in the first of my Internet diary files." Note: on 2002 November 01 I removed the entire Internet diary, complete with its account of how I discovered the favicon icon and learnt how to make one.

A favicon, if you really want to know, is an icon which shows up in the address bar of some browsers, such as Mozilla and Netscape 7. In some browsers it is not visible in the address bar but shows up when pages are bookmarked. It is typically a 16 x 16 pixel icon in the MS Windows icon format. If you have Linux you can make one very easily with the KDE icon editor - click on "icon" then "resize" to get the dialog box where you specify 16 x 16 pixels. Save it as favicon.ico then (one way of doing it) plug it into the directory where your HTML file is and add (to the "head" section of the HTML code) the code <link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico"> ... to see this site's favicon icon, click this link:-

favicon.ico.

2002 October 19 - uploaded an updated and systematically overhauled version of the site. Updated version features a simplified interface and fairly systematic use of three fonts, Times New Roman, Verdana and Courier New. Added the prose poem I Remember. The site now features an Internet diary. (Note, 2002 November 01: the site now no longer features an Internet diary, as I figured it was a waste of everyone's time, including mine.)

2002 August 30 - some small changes and additions.

2002 August 29 - uploaded second version of the site. Used backgrounds for the first time. Adjusted some of the internal links.

2002 August 17 - uploaded the very first version of the site. Very bare bones, with no backgrounds anywhere and only two graphics on the whole site.
